Squirrel Repellent
Some may see squirrels are cute, but for most they can cause damage that can cost money and ruin prized gardens, as well as taking bark off trees, chewing on wiring and grill hoses, as well as getting into bird feeders. For these people a squirrel repellent is the most important part of their garden tools.
There are some that believe that there is nothing that completely works when it comes to deterring squirrels; however, there are many types of homemade squirrel repellents as well electronic ones. For a homemade squirrel repellent, two choices are combining Murphy’s oil soap, hot sauce and cayenne pepper in a spray bottle, then spray the area in which the squirrels are unwanted. Another idea is to use Lysol or Epsom salt mixed in a gallon of water and sprayed in the yard or garden. With either of these solutions it is important to note that they do need to be repeated fairly often as rain and new growth can weaken the effectiveness. Along the same lines, for squirrels that frequently get into the bird feeder, mix cayenne pepper with the seed; birds will continue to eat the seed while keeping the squirrels away. In this category is also the idea of do it yourself squirrel repellents. One idea is to use mothballs as a deterrent, while many will say mothballs will not work as a squirrel repellent; they will work as a temporary solution possibly giving enough time to get professional advice on how to take care of the unwanted guests.
As with most pest repeller, there are electronic solutions available and as with many of the homemade or natural solution, the electronic squirrel repeller does not always receive the best reviews. An electronic squirrel repellent uses an ultrasonic frequency to keep animals away from a specific area. The sound is said to be inaudible to humans by emits a sound that is uncomfortable to small animals, and can be used indoors or outdoors.
For those who read reviews it is more often seen that people will voice their opinions that there are no guaranteed squirrel repellents. While some repeller will work for some, not all will work for everyone. It is often a hit and miss experiment as to what will work in a certain area or scenario. Whether it is electronic, homemade, and natural or an invention that was just thought of, it doesn’t hurt to try as squirrels will continue to terrorize a garden for as long as they can.
