Candles & Coils

Candles & Coils are maybe two of the more popular choices when it comes to repelling insects, as they can be both decorative and be used in different areas at once – as when having a get together outside. If having a large party with several different areas, one or two of these candles can be used in each area, making sure everyone is protected. A mosquito coil, such as the OFF! Mosquito coil can cover an area of 10 ft x 10ft and repel mosquitoes as well as being decorative, often in a terra cotta type pot; these coils come with four refills so there is always repellent available. In addition to the coils, mosquito coil holder offers safety when burning, even if it’s overturned – the fiber net will hold the coil in place and allows the coil to be hung up to laid on a table. While useful, there are precautions to be noted, prolonged inhalation or contact with skin can cause discomfort. Be sure to wash hands before eating to prevent further contamination. OFF! Mosquito coil refills are available and can be used in the same terra cotta pot as the original coil, making it cost effective as well.

Mosquito candles work just as well, and are used in several ways – including the usual wax candles or as a liquid in a torch type candle. The candles, when lit, release a scent, while appealing to humans is one that will keep the pests away – for up to two hours.

Candles & Coils, when talking about repelling insects often talked about in detail with Conceal Candles. Conceal Candles are shown to be a better inhibitor for repelling biting insects than the typical Citronella candles and coils or DEET. Unlike the normal chemicals or candles used, insects avoid them because they smell bad and they go in search of something that smells better, and bite there. With Conceal, it simply confuses the mosquito and it will not be able to bite anyone, anywhere. Also, unlike other Candles & Coils, it is an inhibitor, not a repellent and contains an inhibitor molecule found in the oils of plants and is used commonly in many food flavorings.

In the end do citronella candles really repel mosquitoes? The answer is both yes and no. Citronella works well at repelling mosquitoes, however, works mainly in small areas where there is little wind. When buying candles be sure they have wind covers – as many do not.
